Lady Gaga has descended on Harvard University to launch her foundation aimed at empowering young people. The singer was joined by Oprah Winfrey, self-help guru Deepak Chopra and Kathleen Sebelius, the US health and human services secretary, to kick off the Born This Way foundation.

Gaga spoke to more than 1,100 students and other guests, urging them to “challenge meanness and cruelty. I believe that if you have revolutionary potential, you must make the world a better place.” Her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, inspired her to start the foundation and will be its president.

Gaga’s representative said the singer has made a $1.2m personal contribution to the foundation, named after her 2011 album and hit song. The song promotes self-empowerment and has become an anthem for gay pride.

Winfrey said she supports the foundation because its message aligns with many of her core beliefs, including kindness, compassion, empowerment and acceptance. The famous talk-show host interviewed the singer on stage about the foundation.

Gaga, who has said she was the victim of bullying as a teenager, said the idea for the foundation grew out of the dialogue created after Born This Way was released. She said she received a deluge of letters and emails from people who said such things as, “I want there to be more tolerance in the universe. I want there to be more acceptance.”

Gaga said her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, inspired her to start the foundation. Germanotta will serve as its president.

“She is the sole reason that I am here today. She has always believed in me. She has always been my support, and she makes me want to inject that sense of family and support into the world,” Gaga said.

She said the foundation is working with a new media agency to create a social media environment that fosters the foundation’s goals.

“I want this to be an organisation where you all feel involved,” she said.

Singer Lady Gaga launched her youth foundation at Harvard yesterday because some university programs are offering help.Singer Lady Gaga launched her youth foundation at Harvard yesterday because… (Brian Snyder/Reuters)

When Lady Gaga stepped on stage at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre yesterday to launch her youth foundation, it was hardly a typical appearance for the pop star who has built her reputation with over-the-top theatrics.

She didn’t hatch from an egg, or appear in a dress made of raw steaks. Instead the 25-year-old Gaga wore a subdued full-length black dress and spoke to a polite audience of students, academics, and educational specialists about the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit charity whose mission is to “foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated.’’

The official rollout of the foundation was held at Harvard because the university’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society and its Graduate School of Education are offering assistance to the fledgling organization.

Gaga – who was joined by Oprah Winfrey, spiritual leader Deepak Chopra, and Kathleen Sebelius, the US Health and Human Services secretary – is counting on her supersize persona, which has already had a major influence on pop culture, to help encourage and fund the foundation’s programs.

“The goal of the Born This Way Foundation is to challenge meanness and cruelty by inspiring young people to create a support system in their respective communities,’’ she said. “This is about changing . . . the school environment, and not putting the power in the hands of the teachers or the government.’’

While Gaga said the organization was not “an antibullying charity,’’ much of the talk yesterday revolved around bullying, both in person and on the Web.

Winfrey said she is lending her support because the foundation’s mission is in line with her personal values.

“What is exciting to me,’’ Winfrey said, “is that thought leaders have gathered together as one force to ask why does bullying and violence and hatred against young people continue in our society and what we can do about it.’’

The foundation has yet to reveal many details about what it will offer, but Gaga did say that it hopes to launch a social media platform. Her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, who is Born This Way’s cofounder, said more details about programs would be forthcoming.

In response to her mother’s remarks, Gaga said with a smile that she would rather refer to “parties’’ than programs.

The foundation is planning a nationwide bus tour, which it says will teach teens about getting involved in civic groups and allow them to connect with mentors. The “Born Brave Bus’’ will also follow the route of Gaga’s next North American tour.

While yesterday’s Harvard launch was no Lady Gaga concert, hundreds of fans gathered outside in the afternoon snow for a glimpse of the singer.

The couple, who started dating in September, recently visited Kinney’s parents in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to get their blessing.

The actor’s aunt Kathryn Loh told the Daily Star Sunday: “There’s no doubt he loves her and she loves him. Now everyone’s met her, we love her too! They are perfect together.

“I’m so glad we got to meet the woman behind all the make-up and the outfits. She’s very well-spoken and down-to-earth. She’s basic – a sweet, normal, healthy person.”

Kinney, who plays Mason Lockwood in Vampire Diaries, met GaGa when he starred in her video for ‘You And I’. He is said to be “starry-eyed” at the idea of starting a family with her.

A source added: “Both families are happy and she’s already doodling baby names on scraps of paper. She’s been bragging about how beautiful their children will be because Taylor is so handsome.

“She wants everything with him – love, marriage and a family. But she’s set on becoming a mother before they think about anything else and she’s talking about giving birth in the next year.

“You know this is the real deal because she never talked about babies when she was with her long-term ex-boyfriend Luc Carl. With Taylor, that’s all she talks about now.”

The couple are thought to be dividing their time between her Beverly Hills mansion and a new ?1.2m house in Pennsylvania, which she bought to spend more time near Kinney’s family.

GaGa previously said that she wants kids “a long, long day from now” and joked that she was looking for an Italian sperm donor.

Joanne Trattoria, the restaurant Lady Gaga‘s father Joe Germanotta opened in New York City a month ago, had a special greeter welcoming guests on Thursday night (March 1) and feasting on the food. It was none other than the Mother Monster herself.

While Joanne, named after Gaga’s late aunt and Joe’s sister, has received less than stellar (and some scathing) reviews of its dishes, that hasn’t stopped diners from coming out in droves. Many are likely hoping to catch a glimpse of Gaga on the premises, and on March 1, lucky diners got just that.

Gaga turned up at Joanne at around 7:30 PM with two bodyguards and wearing a demure (by Gaga standards) black dress and sunglasses. In addition to greeting patrons, she also noshed and offered her own critiques of the food.

“I was so surprised to see her!” a guest told Life & Style. “She wasn’t just sitting down, she was really taking charge of the place and making her presence known.” Well, she’s Lady Gaga. It’s not like she blends into the background.

The guest further commented that the Mother Monster “acted like she was more at home. She and her family seemed like they were just having a family dinner in their own kitchen, laughing and chatting. She thanked people for coming in and even pointed out pictures of her family on the walls to one table.”

While Joanne has been ripped for the Italian fare it serves, Gaga had a different opinion of the meatballs, and shared her true feelings about the broccoli and calamari. She wasn’t biased, either, offering up honest criticisms of the food.

“The meatballs were excellent and served just like they are in Italy, well done!,” she reportedly told the cooks. “The broccoli, while I enjoyed it, could actually afford to be a little more bland. It has so much flavor on its own. We don’t want to mask it. The calamari, it was perfection.” Sounds like Gaga has a discerning palate.

Chief chef Art Smith was celebrating his birthday as well as Joanne’s one-month anniversary, upping the celebratory nature of Gaga’s visit. Of course, the ‘Marry the Night’ singer helped lead a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday.’

“Art joined Gaga and her family at their table and about five of the staff members brought out a cake and sang ‘Happy Birthday,’” the guest said. “Gaga belted it out just like everyone else, and the whole crowd cheered afterward.”
